Fall, 2007
Hello Everyone.
We write to you at this time of change – both in the seasons and within the NRLC and LCA. AKC recognition is not a far-off vision any longer – the Leonberger will go into the Miscellaneous class in the next few months! Involvement in both your National and Regional Clubs is more important now than ever as we move to Parent Club Status in the AKC. As Leonberger fanciers, we must educate all those who will be drawn to our beautiful breed.
The new NRLC Board Members, decided by both election and selection of the elected officers are as follows: Tom Class, President; Michele Cohen, Vice President; Robin Wesely, Treasurer; Beverly Travis, Secretary; and Norbert Wesely, Jan Weaver and Michael Dumin, Directors. We thank Laura Class, Dawn Dionne and Carolyn Bacon-Fortier for having served for the past three years. Contact information for all board members is available on the website (www.nrlcleos.org).
We would also like to thank Ira Dierolf and Jennifer Hansgate who pulled off an amazing combined (with the GLLC) two-day Fall Specialty, “Pennsylvania Dutch Leos” this past September. Any specialty is a major undertaking, but one that encompasses two groups over two days, with special events such as Rally-O and CGC and TDI Testing is something else indeed! Without people like Ira and Jennifer, the club would surely suffer!
Speaking of Pennsylvania Dutch Leos, we wish congratulations to Alida Greendyk and Zelda who took Veteran Bitch and Best of Breed on both days. Results for both days are available on the website. We wish to thank our judges, Candy Way, Whitney Coombs, and Joe Fryhover for judging our events, and Mary Ann Ruggiero-Smith for her assistance to them.
Once again this year, Michele Cohen moved us to tears as we lovingly remembered far too many Leonbergers who have left us this past year. The NRLC extends its deepest sympathies to those of you who have lost a Leonberger this year.
As of this writing, we are still looking for a member or members to chair the NRLC Spring Specialty. If you would like to chair the Spring Show, or maybe the Fall Show, please email Tom Class (Thomas.class@verizon.net) to obtain a copy of the NRLC Specialty Guide.
As we stated at the opening of this e-letter, now is the time to come together as a club and what better opportunities present themselves than these:
Kennebunk Prelude, Saturday, December 8nd beginning at 11:00 a.m. w/ Optional Leo Yankee Swap In Maine, the annual Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude (www.christmasprelude.com) will be highlighted by the many Leo owners who continue their tradition of a Leo Stroll through town. Robin Ruggiero is organizing this gathering and invites you to meet downtown for the stroll. People are then invited back to the Ruggiero/LaFlamme’s home for soup, cider and other delicious goodies. Robin is also coordinating a Yankee Swap so please contact her (robinr322@comcast.net) for more information.
Troutbrook Winter Romp, Saturday, January 26th from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Join us for the Annual Troutbrook Winter Romp & Pot Luck. Troutbrook is one of those perfect Leo places – an open field, a pond (likely to be frozen solid in January), and nice hiking trails through the woods. We will have access to the heated lodge, bathrooms and kitchen area. Please bring something to share. Thanks to Ed Williams for coordinating this event!
Sno-cial, Friday, February 22nd through Sunday, February 24th, in memory of Bristol & Coach. Jefferson (Jeff) and Izzy would like to announce the Ninth Annual Leo New England
Winter Sno-cial, taking place in the New Hampshire Lakes region. All well-behaved dogs are welcome. Activities begin Friday evening at the Tamworth Inn, Tamworth, NH in the pub around 6 pm. Festivities continue on Saturday for a morning of hiking Hemenway State Forest, a free afternoon is followed by dinner back at the Tamworth. On Sunday (from 11-3) you are invited to the McRae’s for soup, sandwiches and socializing. Reservations for Tamworth can be made by calling 800-642-7352, or as an alternative, the Lazy Dog Inn (888-323-8350) or SunnyBrook Cottages (603-447-3922). You must make your own dinner reservations for Saturday night at the Tamworth. Full details and an itinerary are available on the website.
As we approach gift-giving and decorating season, consider an NRLC ornament! We now have ornaments available for purchase featuring the NRLC logo for $15, including shipping (see http://nrlcleos.org/2008docs/ornament.jpg for an image of the ornament, please order soon because for Christmas!).
Please send a check payable to the NRLC c/o Tom Class 16 Stanwood St., Gloucester, MA 01930 and your ornament will be sent to you. You may choose from bulb (pictured), oval, teardrop or round shapes.
If you would like to have your own Leo featured on your ornament, contact “Etches in Stone” directly at www.etchesinstone.com.
A limited number of memorial gates are still available as a very special way to remember those Leos who have left us (see http://nrlcleos.org/2008docs/memorialgate.jpg for an image of the gates). The new NRLC Memorial Show Ring is a professional show ring, similar to those found at AKC and other competitions and each ten foot section can be sponsored as a way to memorialize your Leonberger.
Plaques displaying your Leo’s name are displayed for each section. Please complete the Memorial Show Ring form found on our webpage and submit to Tom Class.
The NRLC has a memorial page (www.nrlcleos.org/inmem.php) available to members who would like to share the story of their Leonberger. If you would like to share your story and a photo, please email Tom Class.
This list has been created as a way for the NRLC Officers and Board Members to communicate with you, NRLC Members, or potential members. At the end of this email is a link to follow should you wish to “unsubscribe” to this list. You may be receiving this email because you are a member of the NRLC. Perhaps you are not yet an NRLC member, but are an LCA member residing in the NY, NJ, PA, or New England area. We hope you’ve found the information helpful. If you’d like to join the NRLC, or follow the club’s plans, please visit our website.
Hoping you all enjoy the rest of the Fall Season,
